The Headmaster Mr. Samuel Bannerman-Mensah comes to us from Mfantsipim School in Cape Coast, where he served as assistant headmaster. Since arriving in March 1999 he has worked to improve the school infrastructure, improve the calibre of students, and build ties to the community. He has been a strong supporter of the school's fledgling computer lab and other innovative programs. |

The students attend classes from 6:30 morning assembly to 3:30 closing, with breaks for breakfast and lunch. Regardless of their particular course, all students are required to take courses in English, core mathematics, core science, religious and moral education, and computer literacy. The students entering Wenchi Secondary School this January will have only 2 1/2 years to complete their course and prepare for their West African Examination Council (WAEC) exams. The load is heavy, and students will often be found in the classrooms studying late into the night. |

The bell that calls students to morning assembly and tells them when each class period ends is an old automobile hub. The position of bell-ringer is one of honour. The school's facilities are limited, and most of the infrastructure is far from ideal. The assembly hall is only partway complete. Many of the classroom blocks lack lights. The students lack textbooks and other basic supplies. But we go the furthest we can, with what we have. |

The school's computer lab was officially opened on 1 March 1999 by the director general of Ghana Education Service. From January 2000, all students entering Wenchi Secondary School are provided a minimum of eight weeks' instruction per year, as part of the regular class timetable. During their spare time and when masters are away, students will be found hanging out in the computer lab, playing games or writing email. To find out how you can support the lab and its mission, through money, materials, or moral support, contact the current US Peace Corps volunteer. |

Wenchi is a farming community of about 20,000 people, located approximately 30 km north of Techiman on the Wa road, and about 50 km east of the Cote d'Ivoire border. The population is fairly evenly divided between Christians and Muslims. Wenchi is the home of Dr. Busia, former prime minister of Ghana, who is buried here. There are five senior secondary schools in Wenchi district, of which Wenchi Secondary School is the largest. |
